Blog Entry 7
I learned from doing research that most even though the U.S. is the land of opportunity and with hard work many things are possible. But I also learned that sometimes hard work isn't enough and especially for immigrants, they can be the hardest workers, but the fact that they are immigrants puts a target on their backs. I learned that some of these people have no choice but to live in harsh communities and when it comes to things like voting and work opportunities, they have the shorter end of the stick. Learning about Title 42 was very interesting and seeing how that affected many immigrants. I also learned that almost 50% of undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. do not have access to insurance. This is something that has to be addressed especially right now because the pandemic has caused a lot of illness especially to immigrants and if they don't have insurance, the outcome can be grim. Something that stood out to me is that a lot of immigrants are leaving the U.S. and going back to Mexico because they have a better life there. I found that shocking because all that meant is that the U.S. treated them so poorly that they chose to go back to a country where the opportunities are not as great. To respond to my initial question of Is the American dream tailored just to Caucasians, or do Mexican immigrants have the chance to achieve their own American dream, I would have to say that they do have the chance because anything is possible. However, I will say that the road there will be a lot tougher for them and there will be a lot more obstacles. They have to face a lot of discrimination and hate, but like I said earlier, hard work plus a bit of luck can take anyone anywhere. If I was to do anything differently, I would probably do some more research on historical Mexican immigrants and see what the road was like for them. It would be interesting to see the difficulties they faced on their journey to success. I would like to explore the immigrants that are from different races. Like the immigrants who come from Asia, or immigrants who come from El Salvador. I would like to see how their story is different and if it is easier or harder.
