I learned from doing research that most even though the U.S. is the land of opportunity and with hard work many things are possible. But I also learned that sometimes hard work isn't enough and especially for immigrants, they can be the hardest workers, but the fact that they are immigrants puts a target on their backs. I learned that some of these people have no choice but to live in harsh communities and when it comes to things like voting and work opportunities, they have the shorter end of the stick. Learning about Title 42 was very interesting and seeing how that affected many immigrants. I also learned that almost 50% of undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. do not have access to insurance. This is something that has to be addressed especially right now because the pandemic has caused a lot of illness especially to immigrants and if they don't have insurance, the outcome can be grim. Something that stood out to me is that a lot of immigrants are leaving the U.S. an...

Video: https://youtu.be/FVUkKKc3Vvk This is a Ted Talk that I thought would be something different to include in my blog. This ted talk is about the story of Elizabeth Camarillo Gutierrez. She works on the trading floor and while she is very successful, she had a difficult and rough childhood. She begins with talking about the narratives associated with Mexican immigrants and how they affect them negatively. The two narratives she talks about are Mexican immigrants only being able to do low wage jobs and the idea of the "super immigrant" an immigrant with lots of success, making those who are struggling feel unworthy. Her parents had to return to Mexico at the age of 15 but she chose to stay in the U.S. She knew that she was one day going to make something of herself and achieve the American dream. That is exactly what she did, and she ended up flying her brother out to the U.S. so that she could help him achieve success. As successful immigrant, she ...

Youtube Video:  How smugglers seduce Central American migrants with the 'American Dream' - YouTube This video caught attention because it is a bit different from all the other articles, and videos I have provided already. This video focuses on how smugglers persuade migrants to make the journey to the U.S. by telling them it will be an easy trip. The reality is that most of the journeys are cut short by authorities and the journey is long. I chose to include this video because it shows what some people are willing to do just to have a chance at a better life here. They are willing to take the risk because the payoff could be worth it. Unfortunately for most, the dream continues to be a dream and not reality.

Scholarly Article:  Immigration status as a health care barrier in the USA during COVID-19 - ScienceDirect This article focuses on the COVID-19 pandemic and migration. The United States implemented very strict laws that prevented migrants from entering the U.S because officials feared that they would further spread covid. Even though agencies like ICE have stated that the detention centers have taken mitigation measures, individuals have been discovered to be most at risk in those settings. The pandemic has done a very good job of showing just how forgotten about these people are. The chances of a minority person catching covid and dying is much higher than a white person who has better access to healthcare. As stated in this article, " In 2018, almost one-quarter of authorized immigrants and almost half (45%) of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. did not have insurance, making noncitizens significantly more likely to be uninsured as compared to citizens." (Sciencedirect.c...

Blog 2: A first reflection, source analysis

Scholarly Article #1-  The American Dream: An Illusion or Reality for Latino Immigrants (liberty.edu) Scholarly Article #2-  Housing and neighborhood quality among undocumented Mexican and Central American immigrants (nih.gov) Media Article-  America needs more, not fewer, migrant workers (theconversation.com) Media Article #2-  'The US isn't an option anymore': why California's immigrants are heading back to Mexico | California | The Guardian Social Media source- https://youtu.be/GNMU-y_lnGc The first scholarly article looks takes a look at some of the challenges Mexican immigrants have to face when making the transition to the United States. It looks at the difficulties of obtaining equal opportunities that whites have. Opportunities like voting, work, and financial aid. The article also mentions the differences Latinos face when it comes to equal pay, they often get the least. However, it also touches base on how resilient Latinos are. The second schola...

Research Question

Topic of research blog: The topic of my research blog will be Mexican immigration. More specifically looking at the odds of a Mexican immigrant being able to afford a house in a nice area, own a reliable car, and provide for their family.  Research Question: Is the American dream tailored just to Caucasians, or do Mexican immigrants have the chance to achieve their own American dream? Why I chose this topic: I chose this topic because I am very interested to see the odds of a Mexican immigrant making a solid living in the U.S. Also looking at the data to support those findings.
