Blog 2: A first reflection, source analysis
Scholarly Article #1- The American Dream: An Illusion or Reality for Latino Immigrants (liberty.edu)
Scholarly Article #2- Housing and neighborhood quality among undocumented Mexican and Central American immigrants (nih.gov)
Media Article- America needs more, not fewer, migrant workers (theconversation.com)
Media Article #2- 'The US isn't an option anymore': why California's immigrants are heading back to Mexico | California | The Guardian

The first scholarly article looks takes a look at some of the challenges Mexican immigrants have to face when making the transition to the United States. It looks at the difficulties of obtaining equal opportunities that whites have. Opportunities like voting, work, and financial aid. The article also mentions the differences Latinos face when it comes to equal pay, they often get the least. However, it also touches base on how resilient Latinos are. The second scholarly article focuses much more on living conditions for Mexican immigrants. The article explains how Mexican immigrants are less likely to own a house than a white American born here and also goes into detail about the conditions that these people are living in. Some of these people have no choice but to live in very poor neighborhoods where the houses have major structural deficiencies, and many are worried about the environmental conditions in these neighborhoods. The first media article is from when Donald Trump was president, but it focuses on the harsh conditions migrant workers are willing to face in order to obtain citizenship in the United States. This article asks the reader to put themselves in the migrant workers shoes and see how they would react. The article explains how many of them are forced to use different identities and many live in fear because they could get deported at any point. The second media article I chose is a little bit more focused on California, a very diverse state. This article explains how many immigrants are leaving California and going back to Mexico, erasing all that they have worked for. Contributors to this have been the pandemic and Trump's anti-immigration policies. The article includes families that have been forced to move back because there is just too much uncertainty. Some even stating that Mexico is a better place to live for them right now because they have access to healthcare and unemployment benefits. The social media source I chose to use is more of an interview style that interviews immigrants who have come to the U.S. and have found success. The immigrants interviewed are from Mexico but also from all over the world. These interviewees go over the possibilities that the U.S. has to offer and how they have found success. This is not a one size fits all approach, but it does help immigrants who are struggling find hope.
